Bangles rose to prominence in the 1870s, becoming the most fashionable arm ornaments. The typical design featured a wide golden band with a circular gem-set at its centre, or enamelled decorative motifs. These motifs were often detachable or entirely studded with cabochon or faceted stones. During the 1860s gold bangles were often stylised on ancient Greek and Assyrian motifs.
